November 2015 – Metre Zone

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here will run for two weeks during Science Week from Monday 9th to Friday 20th November 2015.

We need engineers who are keen to talk about their work and find out what school students think about engineering. This is your opportunity to tell them how they can apply what they learn in their Maths, Technology, Design or Science classes in the real world.

General Engineering Zone

Metre Zone
Engineers are more than Structural Engineers or Mechanical, more than Electrical Engineers or Civil; engineers aren’t defined by just one field. We’re looking for five engineers from different areas of engineering to help show students the breadth engineering, and that it isn’t all spanners and hard hats.

Take part in free engineering outreach this November!

February’s I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here! saw over 370 students ask more than 600 questions covering topics from burning lasers to biggest professional fails, and it certainly had an impact on students and engineers alike:

Bodyke tweet‘Students enthusiasm in the live chats and fantastic questions really made this competition a great event to be part of…. are we allowed to enter again next time???’  – Padraic Morrisey, engineer and winner February 2015

February 2015 – Boole Zone

After our first I’m an Engineer event last November, and thanks to funding from Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover ProgrammeI’m an Engineer comes back to Ireland in February!

During Engineers Week, from Monday 2nd to Friday 13th February, we will be celebrating the bicentenary of George Boole’s birth with the Boole Zone. George Boole was an mathematician, philosopher and logician. He worked in algebraic logic, and was appointed as the first professor of mathematics at University College Cork in 1849.

In November 2014 we run our first I’m an Engineer event in Ireland, together with  I’m a Scientist Ireland. We ran four I’m a Scientist and two I’m an Engineer zones. Two of the I’m a Scientist zones were themed (Evolution and Sustainability) and two of them were general (Boron and Beryllium).

One of the I’m an Engineerzones was themed (Energy) and the other one was general (Kelvin).

I’m an Engineer returns in Engineers Week 2015

The first ever I’m an Engineer event in Ireland is barely over, and we have some good news to share.

Thanks to funding from Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover Programme, we will be running 3 more zones of I’m an Engineer in 2015.

The first of these zones will coincide with Engineers Week in February 2015. We’re looking for 5 engineers to answer questions, online, from inquisitive students all around Ireland, for the 2 weeks of Monday 2nd – Friday 13th February.

November 2014 Zones

With new funding secured for our events in Ireland from SFI’s Discover Programme, I’m an Engineer will be running for the first time in Ireland during Science Week this November (10th–21st).

We need engineers who are keen to talk about their work and find out what school students think about engineering. This is your opportunity to tell them how they can apply what they learn in their Maths, Technology, Design or Science classes to the real word. As Matt Maddock, a previous I’m an Engineer UK participant, put it:

If you get any joy from explaining the world, or think you might have some aptitude for it, then don’t hesitate to apply!

In case you need more convincing, members of Engineers Ireland can earn up to one day’s Continual Professional Development (CPD) by taking part.

Ireland’s Call for Engineers

Engineers have always been welcome to take part in I’m a Scientist, but that doesn’t do justice to the fact that there are probably more engineers than scientists in the country. And that since schools often don’t teach “engineering” there is less opportunity for schools to understand this essential discipline.

I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here! works in the same way as its older sister. Five engineers CHAT with students, answer the questions ASKed, and compete for VOTEs to win a €500 prize.

This November 10th – 21st we are running 2 zones, during Science Week. We’ll announce what the themes are in September. In the UK we’ve run a wide range: Space, Detection, Transport, Water, Energy, Health. What do you think we should run in Ireland?
