November 2014 Zones

With new funding secured for our events in Ireland from SFI’s Discover Programme, I’m an Engineer will be running for the first time in Ireland during Science Week this November (10th–21st).

We need engineers who are keen to talk about their work and find out what school students think about engineering. This is your opportunity to tell them how they can apply what they learn in their Maths, Technology, Design or Science classes to the real word. As Matt Maddock, a previous I’m an Engineer UK participant, put it:

If you get any joy from explaining the world, or think you might have some aptitude for it, then don’t hesitate to apply!

In case you need more convincing, members of Engineers Ireland can earn up to one day’s Continual Professional Development (CPD) by taking part.

Keep reading for details of the zones, or if you want to jump straight to the application, teachers apply here: imanengineer.ie/teachers, and engineers here: imanengineer.ie/engineers-apply.

Energy Zone

From designing and manufacturing alternative energy sources, to testing and improving existing processes. this is a fairly broad zone so your work doesn’t have to fit into a strict definition of an energy engineer; if your work touches on energy in any way, this is the zone for you.

General Engineering Zone

The Kelvin Zone is the first “General Engineering Zone” we’ve run in any I’m an Engineer event. Engineers are more than Structural Engineers or Mechanical, more than Electrical Engineers or Civil; engineers aren’t defined by just one field. We’re looking for five engineers from different areas of engineering to help show students the breadth engineering, and that it isn’t all spanners and hard hats.

Apply now to take part!

Update: 26 September 2014
We’ve extended the application deadline for schools! If you would like to take part, please email josh@gallomanor.com.

We’ll send an email out soon after you sign up asking which zones and how many classes you would like to bring online.

Take a look at this post on the I’m a Scientist blog for our advice on your application! The advice is aimed at scientists, but the same principles apply.

Thanks to Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover Programme for funding I’m an Engineer Ireland.
