The Energy Zone had a very high percentage of active students, up to 91% of the registered students chatted, asked a question, commented or voted in the site.
Laura Tobin, the zone winner, attended to every live chat and was therefore responsible of more than half of the scientists’ lines of live chat.
The five engineers taking part in the event engaged really well, even Lisa Phelan, who took part from California and was waking up early to meet the students in the live chats.
In November 2014 we run our first I’m an Engineer event in Ireland, together with I’m a Scientist Ireland. We ran four I’m a Scientist and two I’m an Engineer zones.
Two of the I’m a Scientist zones were themed (Evolution and Sustainability) and two of them were general (Boron and Beryllium). One of the I’m an Engineer zones was themed (Energy) and the other one was general (Kelvin). Continue reading
The first ever I’m an Engineer event in Ireland is barely over, and we have some good news to share.
Thanks to funding from Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover Programme, we will be running 3 more zones of I’m an Engineer in 2015.
The first of these zones will coincide with Engineers Week in February 2015.
We need engineers who are keen to talk about their work and find out what school students think about engineering.
This is your opportunity to tell them how they can apply what they learn in their Maths, Technology, Design or Science classes to the real word. As Matt Maddock, a previous I’m an Engineer UK participant, put it:
Engineers have always been welcome to take part in I’m a Scientist, but that doesn’t do justice to the fact that there are probably more engineers than scientists in the country. And that since schools often don’t teach “engineering” there is less opportunity for schools to understand this essential discipline.

After each event we compile a report for the zone, with web data, observations about popular topics, examples of good engagement and quotes from those taking part.
We send the report out to all the engineers and teachers who took part, to give them a meaningful summary of their participation.
I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here is an online activity where school students get to meet and interact with engineers.
It’s a competition between engineers, where the students are the judges.
Students challenge the engineers over intense, fast-paced, online live Chats. Then they Ask the engineers all the questions they want to, and Vote for their favourite scientist to win a prize of £500 to communicate their work with the public.
